What is Autonomic Response Muscle Testing and How Does It Work?

In conventional chiropractic, physical therapy, neurology and orthopedic practices, muscle testing is an important part of the physical exam.  This style of muscle testing singles out a muscle to assess the health of the muscle itself – or the nerve supplying it.  For example, if we challenge the strength of a bicep (upper arm) muscle and it tests weak, we investigate further to see if the weakness is from an injury to the muscle itself, the nerve that serves that muscle or perhaps a spinal or brain injury that causes the muscle to fail.

In A.R.T. (Autonomic Response Testing) we use a more dynamic test of the muscle as we look for the patient’s ability to respond with adequate counterpressure when increased pressure is applied to the arm (as the practitioner pushes a bit harder, the patient can match the increased pressure and lock the arm strong).  The strong arm is referred to as the indicator muscle and will be used to explore the strength of different acupuncture points on the body.

The next step is to assess the different reflex points for strength or weakness.  We test for the following reflexes:

  • brain in 3 places: front, top, back
  • thyroid
  • lungs
  • liver
  • heart
  • gallbladder
  • stomach
  • pancreas
  • small intestine
  • large intestine
  • kidneys
  • uterus and ovaries
  • prostate and testicles

During this process we also include testing of scars, teeth, sinuses, ears, joints as well as any symptomatic areas (areas of pain or discomfort reported by the patient).

Once we have identified reflex points that test week, we use homeopathic test kits to identify the stressor that may be causing the stress to the organ or gland.

Example: If the liver reflex point tests weak and we find that it changes to strong when touching the metals test kit. This indicates that metal toxins may be a reason the liver is irritated.

Next Step! We then move on to test different remedies that would help detox the metals from the liver tissues.  The correct remedy, when placed on the body, will strengthen the weak liver test.  This indicates to the practitioner that this specific remedy will assist in detoxing and supporting the liver to improve its function.

Autonomic Response Testing can be used to uncover the root cause of many tough to treat conditions such as brain fog, poor digestion, headaches, skin issues, asthma/allergies, hormonal imbalances, anxiety/depression, weight gain, and more.
