Jump-Start Your Emotional Wellness with 7 Simple,
Mood-Boosting Habits!

Welcome to our January 2025 post where we focus on emotional health during the winter months.

If you are someone who struggles with lower mood and poor motivation during the darker days of the year… check out some of the tips below

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

I like to be careful calling a state of mind a disorder.  That said, noticing that you are experiencing lower moods and decreased motivation can be a challenge. If you find you are having a lasting lower mood, try the following ideas to see if you can experience a shift.

This lower mood and sluggish motivation can be linked to reduced exposure to sunlight, which can affect the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) and the production of mood-regulating chemicals like serotonin and melatonin.

  1. Maximize Exposure to Natural Light
  • Spend time outdoors: Try to get outside during daylight hours, even if it’s cloudy. A short walk in the morning or midday can help.
  • Position yourself near windows: Arrange your workspace or seating area to maximize exposure to natural light. Have your morning coffee or tea with your face in the sun

  1. Light Therapy

Sometimes we go through a time of cloudy, low sun kind of days.  When this is the case, consider working with light therapy tools.

  • Invest in a light therapy box: Use a light box for 20–30 minutes daily, preferably in the morning. This mimics natural sunlight and helps regulate your circadian rhythm (serotonin/melatonin cycles and sleep/wake cycles).
  • Consistency is key: Start light therapy as soon as symptoms appear, ideally in early fall. (never too late to begin!) – check out this link for a potential light box for you to use in your home. https://www.moodozi.io/moodozi-shop-usa

  1. Stay Physically Active
  • Exercise regularly: Activities like walking, yoga, or aerobic exercises release endorphins and can boost your mood.
  • Move outdoors when possible: Exercising outside combines physical activity with exposure to natural light.  Even a 15-20 minute showshoe can leave you feeling refreshed and motivated.

  1. Maintain a Balanced Diet
  • Focus on mood-boosting foods: Incorporate omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds), whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Limit sugar and processed foods: These can cause energy crashes and exacerbate mood swings.
  • Stay hydrated – try to drink ½ of your body weight in ounces per day!

  1. Establish a Routine
  • Prioritize sleep: Stick to a consistent sleep schedule to support a healthy circadian rhythm.
  • Set daily goals: Structured activities can help reduce feelings of lethargy and improve motivation.

  1. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
  • Try mindfulness techniques: Meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce anxiety.
  • Engage in hobbies: Creative outlets like painting, knitting, or cooking can provide a sense of accomplishment and joy.

  1. Supplement with Vitamin D
  • Get your levels checked: Low vitamin D levels are common in winter and can exacerbate SAD.
  • Supplement if necessary: We can muscle testing to see if your body is calling for Vitamin D and then dose how much your body would need to feel a benefit.

Please be advised that prolonged lower moods and feelings of depression may need a check in with a professional who can help you assess your situation and come up with a plan for helping you to find relief.  Feel free to bring this up in our sessions and we can explore a plan that makes sense for you.
