Tools for Altering Your Brain Waves

Welcome to our February news – we’re sharing tips for improving your mindset, your focus, and your Sense of Wellbeing using tools to alter your brain waves (states of consciousness).

There are straightforward techniques available that can help you to alter your brain wave state, promoting calmness, focus, better sleep and a sense of wellbeing.

Let’s start with a quick explanation of the different states of consciousness and the various brain wave frequencies that correspond to distinct mental states.

Brain waves are categorized into five main types: delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma – each associated with different levels of consciousness and cognitive processes.

We typically are operating from a state of Beta when we are awake and running our day.  Finding methods to transition from a Beta state—characterized by external focus and problem-solving—to a Theta state—where relaxation and ease can be achieved—provides useful techniques for shifting oneself back to a balanced state.

Breathing Exercises

Slow, deep breathing can stimulate the “rest and digest” part of your nervous system, promoting relaxation. Try this easy exercise – find a place to sit with your feet flat on the floor.  Take a deep breath in through your nose and blow it slowly out through your mouth as if you are blowing through a straw.  Repeat this at least 3 times.  This technique has shown to reset the vagus nerve and helps take you out of a fight or flight pattern, returning you to a space of rest and digest and regulate.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Regular practice has been shown to increase alpha brain waves associated with relaxation and decreased anxiety. One seemingly silly way to come back to the moment is to set your gaze on something that brings you joy and breath easy for 30-60 seconds.  This could be a photo of someone you love, a beautiful plant, your pet or a piece of art that you find to be cool.  One other tip, do what you are doing while you are doing it.  Try to stay with what you are doing and not drift off to your to do list for at least 5 minutes! (challenge yourself to make it 15-30 minutes).

Binaural Beats

Listening to binaural beats can help sync your brain waves to a desired frequency. For instance, theta waves can enhance relaxation and creativity, while delta waves promote deep sleep. Yoga

Incorporating yoga into your routine can have profound effects on brain wave activity. The combination of movement, breath control, and meditation can increase alpha and theta brain waves, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of well-being. You can do this at home or in a classroom with others.  Whatever makes it easy for you to try it out.  Consider committing to 7 days of 10-15 minutes and see if it feels like a good tool for you personally.
