In this post, we’ll share helpful information and resources for assisting with Vertigo, a condition that presents as dizziness, loss of balance or feeling like the room is spinning.
Vertigo is a sensation that often feels like the room is spinning or swaying, even when you are standing still. It is a type of dizziness that can disrupt your balance and make it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Sometimes it may occur when you are lying down or turning over in bed.
This is a tough one as it can occur seemingly out of nowhere and can be difficult to pinpoint the cause and then to come up with a successful solution.
Here are some of the common causes of vertigo
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): This occurs when small calcium particles (canaliths) clump up in the inner ear canals, causing brief episodes of dizziness.
- Inflammation of the vestibular nerve or other structures of the inner ear: An inner ear infection, typically viral, that affects the structures of the inner ear.
- Meniere’s Disease: A disorder of the inner ear characterized by sudden episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.
- Head Injuries: Trauma to the head can lead to vertigo and other symptoms due to damage to the inner ear or brain.
- Stroke: Vertigo may be a symptom of a stroke, particularly when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
- Certain medications
As mentioned above, the common reasons for this issue often involves inflammation of the inner ear or perhaps congestion of the sinuses etc. Common allopathic treatment for vertigo can involve the use of the following medications:
- Antihistamines
- Anticholinergics
- Benzodiazepines
- Antiemetics (to control nausea and vomiting)
- Diuretics (for Meniere’s disease)
How Autonomic Response Testing and the Quest 4 Scan Can Help
I am so grateful to have the Autonomic Response testing methods as well as the Qest 4 scan to help us look for the underlying cause of the dizziness or vertigo so we can optimize our target for helping our patients try to resolve the issue.
Gut Microbiome
When people come to our clinic for help with vertigo we can often find the gut microbiome is out of balance. A person may be dealing with an imbalance of yeast/fungus or parasites causing the gut to be slightly toxic and causing inflammation in the lungs and sinuses.
Liver / Gallbladder Health
Another issue can be the liver and/or gallbladder are congested and not allowing bile, lymph, or blood to move freely through the organs. This imbalance can lead to poor release of the lungs and sinuses contributing to the inflammation of the inner ear.
Vascular Inflammation post Covid or Covid Shots
Another possible target for clearing vertigo can involve managing circulation and lymph movement after having had covid or the covid shots in the last year to 2 years. We have seen excellent results when we pay attention to clearing post covid or post covid vaccine toxins from the circulation and lymph systems. Getting this moving can allow the sinuses and inner ear to drain, reducing inflammation of the inner ear and helping to resolve any inflammation in the blood vessels and freeing up the sinuses, tonsils, and lungs. Undergoing a guided detoxification of the spike proteins that are a part of covid infections and shots.
Dental Issues
This is another area that can cause chronic low grade immune issues leading to inflammation in the sinuses and inner ear. Engaging in oil pulling, seeing a biological dentist who may be able to better identify any dental issues that are subtle and more difficult to detect.
TMJ, Upper Cervical or Cranio Sacral Imbalances
The joints of your jaw and the upper cervical bones of your neck are rich with nerve endings that tell your body and brain where you are in space. If there is lack of proper movement in either the TMJ or the cervical spine you may experience this same dizziness and/or vertigo. Seeing a chiropractor who is skilled in these areas can offer great relief.
Potential Additional Solutions
Physical therapy techniques, such as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), can help improve balance and reduce dizziness. Specific maneuvers like the Epley maneuver are effective for BPPV.
Home Remedies
Some home remedies and lifestyle changes can alleviate vertigo symptoms:
- Maintaining hydration
- Avoiding sudden head movements
- Sleeping with the head elevated
- Ginger tea or supplements
- Chiropractic / Cranio Sacral
- Acupuncture
Preventative Measures
Preventing vertigo involves managing the underlying conditions and adopting certain lifestyle changes:
- Avoiding known triggers
- Regular exercise to improve balance
- Healthy diet to prevent conditions like migraines
- Protecting the head from injury
- Managing stress levels
In Conclusion
Vertigo can significantly impact one’s quality of life, but understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatments can aid in effective management. Medical diagnosis used to rule out any issues needing medical intervention are an important part of the plan. Once disease level issues have been ruled out, Autonomic Response Testing, chiropractic and the Qest 4 scan can be powerful tools for getting to even deeper root causes and a more effective treatment plan. Designing a care plan coming from the muscle testing techniques can sometimes give us an upper hand on knowing how to help each person with an individualized specific to each person and the circumstances they are needing to resolve.
